Medically, we consist of ten ‘SYSTEMS’: the digestive system, nervous system, immune system and so on.
Essentially our systems are INTEGRATED, yet each of us is mentally and physically different in detail. For example, our mind is as individual as our face. We’ve been ‘programmed’ by our inherited genes and by life experiences. Each system of the body and mind is AUTOMATICALLY influenced every second of the day and night by the amazing autonomic system. And it is stress, anxiety and emotional events that add further load to our ability to cope. Each of us is UNIQUE.

Moderate level of stress and anxiety are fine for most people – we can feel motivated and alive by the right level of stress. But excessive stress (or distress) can arise from many sources such as: perceived danger, the unexpected – whether actual, imaginary, or anticipated, traumas, financial problems, relationships, conflicts, bad news, or negative emotional experiences (past and present). There is a long list of possible stress factors! All of which will age our body and cause mental disharmony.
Over time we ‘bottle-up’ stress, which eventually seeks release (sometimes as a delayed reaction), through panic attacks, chronic anxiety (fear spread thinly), depression, or a multitude of physical conditions – even skin diseases. The symptoms often reflect our personality. Indeed the mind influences our body in VERY MANY WAYS and as individuals we vary in our ability to cope with stress and anxiety.
In an average 6 minute consultation, a busy GP just doesn’t have time to do much more than prescribe medication or make a referral for psychosomatic conditions, including stress, anxiety and depression. Although medication can have a place as a treatment for these conditions, drugs are generally not designed to resolve the cause of such ‘dis-eases’. They may just control or reduce symptoms.
